The staff at Harvard-Westlake is amazing, and they had all but submitted their final deadline when they decided that they wanted to re-work the cover design. Most of the work had been determined by the staff – they knew they wanted a predominantly red cover with a photo and the hand-rendered “HOW” in the design. We were struggling with a horizontal, almost panoramic crowd shot and it just wasn’t giving the staff that warm, tingly feeling you get when you know your cover is right.

When they called me in, I worked on a few panoramic options before making the photo vertical and extremely narrow, giving the book an almost quarterbound effect while also giving you the feel that you’re “peeking” inside the book. In the end, this was the option they chose.

What they’ve done on the inside of the book is spectacular. But this website isn’t about the insides of books, so you’ll have to track down a copy and judge for yourself.

They say that books with a high page count should avoid doing a side-bound book because the weight of the pages on a shorter spine can damage the book. Olympia High School in Orlando, Florida took that to heart when they conceived their “Stretch” theme – they printed custom rubber bands (the blue vertical stripe on the right side of the cover) to not only relate to their theme, but also to help hold the book together.
